BSNL to Hold US$5 Bil. GSM Equipment Order
July 15, 2005
Within the coming two months Indian telecom company BSNL will put out the largest order for procurement of GSM equipment ever, with the company looking for 60 million lines at a cost of over US$5 billion. In June GSM subscriber base in India stood at 44.9 million, meaning that BSNL's 60 million new lines would be about 40% more than the existing number of lines. Companies which would have a shot at landing the order would be Siemens, Nokia, Ericsson, Alcatel, Motorola, Huawei, Nortel and ZTE. BSNL is the second largest GSM operator in India with over 10 million subscribers, trailing only Bharti which has more than 11 million.
